Winona Outdoor Collaborative Announces Transition in Leadership

Winona, MN - The Winona Outdoor Collaborative (WOC) has announced a leadership transition with Executive Director Alexa Shapiro stepping down from her position. This change has been in progress since late June and became official in early January. Shapiro has been instrumental in the organization's development, growth, and success over the past four years.

In a statement released by Shapiro, she shared that her decision to step down was not an easy one. For over three years, she has faced chronic health issues that have made it difficult for her to keep up with the responsibilities of her position. Shapiro’s health is steadily improving and she’s hopeful that this time away from work will allow her to prioritize her health in a way that she couldn’t while supporting the Collaborative in its start-up phase.

"I'm so grateful to have had the privilege to take time away from work with the support of my family. It’s been a long few years of not feeling myself, and I’m looking forward to finally having the time to work towards recovery so I can be more present in life again,” said Shapiro. .

WOC board member Sydney Bockelman expressed gratitude for Shapiro's contributions to the organization, saying, "Her vision and leadership have played a critical role in the development, growth, and success of the organization. It's been an honor for me to work alongside Alexa because I can tell you I certainly never would have taken on this endeavor alone, nor would this have been successful without someone who has the work ethic & conscience of Alexa."

The WOC board is shifting to a working model, and members will be actively involved in every aspect of operations. The organization's focus will continue to be on meet-ups, programs, and gear swaps, with the membership program and gear rentals continuing as well.

Looking forward to 2024, the WOC encourages those interested in becoming more involved with the Collaborative or leading programs to consider joining as a volunteer or board member. The organization remains committed to promoting inclusion and accessibility for outdoor recreation in 2024 and beyond.
